Project Description

Mark Whitwell is interested in developing an authentic yoga practice for the individual, based on the teachings of Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, “the teacher of the teachers,” and his son T.K.V. Desikachar.

After first meeting these two great teachers in 1973, Mark realized the importance of their scholarship and committed his life to furthering the communication. His teachings clarify the profound relevance of ancient wisdom to modern times.

Mark has taught yoga for many years throughout the world, adapting the principles of the Great Tradition to the needs of people from many cultures and many countries. He was the editor of and contributor to T.K.V. Desikachar’s book, The Heart of Yoga: Developing a Personal Practice, and is the author of Yoga of Heart and The Promise. His US charity, the Heart of Yoga Peace Project, helps deliver yoga education in conflict zones.

Session 3: God and Sex: Now We Get Both

For centuries it has been assumed that the sacred and the physical-sexual were mutually exclusive, leading to all kinds of cultural toxicity and abuse of the feminine, from celibate denial to “neo-tantric” exaggeration and manipulation. We now have the tools of real Yoga to reject this programming and participate with sanity and grace in the male-female harmony that is the power and nurturing of all of life.

Session 4: Asana IS Hatha Yoga, the non-dual Tantra of Direct Intimacy with Life

In the popularization of yoga in the West, it has often become a practice of attainment towards a future result, as if we are not already the power of the cosmos, arising as a pure intelligence just as we are. Discussion and practice of how asana itself IS our full-body prayer to life, our direct intimacy with the power of life that is arising as us and everything else
